| Antique print - Wonderful Cats Sailing in an Umbrella by H Officer Smith 1904A print from an extremely rare British children's annual. These adorable cats are by 'Officer Smith' - I can find very little information on him, except that he contributed to a number of children's annuals in the early C20th. These cats are very like Louis Wain and I've heard mention that this is a pseudonym of Wain but cannot verify this and although there are similarities, there seems to me to be a definite difference - if anyone has any information on this I would be very pleased to hear. However, Wain or not, I think they are at least as desirable as Wain cats and would make a worthy start to a new collection. Here the cats are sailing in an umbrella - one reads the paper, one has a fishing net while the other rows - the title is "The Crew of the Brollygamp" - a wonderful illustration. |
