| Antique print - Wonderful Cats - Pussy's Butcher or the Cat's Meat Cat 1904A print from an extremely rare British children's annual.A wonderful image of a cat and her kitten, visiting the Cat's Meat Cat or Pussy's Butcher. The cat himself sports a smart peacock feather in his cap. Good moring, Mr Butcher, have you any meat to-day?" "Yes, Ma'am, the best and freshest that has ever come your way;" "But I hope it's not too dear, though; your prices must be high." "Two stickfuls for a penny. Come, madam, will you buy? If you toil along to market, none cheaper will be found; So let me save you trouble, and bring your dinner round" Beautiful fluffy cats with fur that you could just ruffle - these adorable cats are by 'Officer Smith' - I can find very little information on him, except that he illustrated a number of children's annuals in the early C20th. These cats are very like Louis Wain and I've heard mention that this is a pseudonym of Wain but cannot verify this and although there are similarities, there seems to me to be a definite difference - if anyone has any information on this I would be very pleased to hear. However, Wain or not, I think they are at least as desirable as Wain cats and would make a worthy start to a new collection. |
