| Antique print - Wonderful Reynard the Fox - "The Road to Execution" 1852 Engraving From an absolutely beautiful, rare edition of the classic tale of Reynard the Fox - a trickster figure whose story is told in a number of anthropomorphic tales from medieval Europe. Reynard is accused by the other animals of all manner of heinous crimes and is summoned by the King (Lion) to court to defend himself. This is an exquisite, high quality rare steel engraving after designs by H Leutemann. An exquisite, rare steel engraving showing Reynard being led to his death by his accusers, among them, the bear, wolf and cat. Isegrim the wolf taunts the poor fox by holding the noose in front of him as he walks. Wonderful detail, including a pair of slugs, a caterpillar and a beetle watching the procession, and two owls and a Bat looking very pious as they pass by... The King now spoke the dreadful word, Which sentenced Reynard to the cord, And he was quickly seized and bound, By the grim foes that stood around....
Meantime, the whole of Reynard's foes, Around the hapless culprit close, And lead him to a neighbouring mead, Where a tall gibbet rear'd its head... Of course, with Reynard's wily skills, he persuades the King to pardon him as he has an answer to all accusers. (H Leutemann pinx, T Heamond sc) |
