| | Antique Print Fairy Tale Fable Nursery Illustration ArtAn early and rare image of one of Harry Clarke's superb illustrations from Hans Andersen's Fairy tales. Irish illustrator, Harry Clarke (1889-1931), together with Rackham, Neilsen and Dulac, was one of the finest illustrators of his time. As with Aubrey Beardsley, with whom he is often compared, some of Clarke's finest work was in black and white. A vivid and often macabre imagination informs his work, and his fairy tale illustrations are superb. A beautiful image illustrating 'The Tinder Box' in which the tinder box gives the soldier power over three magical dogs. As always with Clarke, the genius is in the detail - the soldier's clothing is exquisite - high topped leather boots and magnificent feather in his cap. Again, checks are a popular motif, with the large blue and white checked cloth being echoed in the pink and black edging of the cloak. Wonderful art nouveau candle sticks light the chamber and the dog stands on a plinth framed by decorative curtains. Lovely, rich colouring to this wonderful example of Clarke's work - a rare and beautiful print. This print would be lovely for a child's nursery |
