| | Antique Print Fairy Tale Fable Nursery Illustration ArtAn early and rare image of one of Harry Clarke's superb illustrations from Hans Andersen's Fairy tales. Irish illustrator, Harry Clarke (1889-1931), together with Rackham, Neilsen and Dulac, was one of the finest illustrators of his time. As with Aubrey Beardsley, with whom he is often compared, some of Clarke's finest work was in black and white. A vivid and often macabre imagination informs his work, and his fairy tale illustrations are superb. An exceptionally beautiful image illustrating Andersen's 'The Shepherdess and the Chimney-Sweeper' - 'Have you really courage to go into the wide world with me? Asked the chimney-sweeper.'. As always with Clarke, the genius is in the detail - the Chimney sweep's ladder is covered in a beautiful chequered pattern which is echoed on the base of the Shepherdess figurine; their clothing is exquisitely decorative and the colouring rich. - a wonderful example of Clarke's art nouveau inspired work - a rare and beautiful print. The story tells of '...a lovely little Shepherdess made of china. Her shoes were gilt, her dress was adorned with a red rose, and besides this she had a golden hat and a shepherd's crook: she was lovely. Close by her stood a little Chimney-Sweeper, black as coal, and also made of porcelain: he was as clean and neat as any other man, for it was only make-believe that hes was a sweep; the china-workers might just as well have made a prince of him, if they had been so minded.' A beautiful blue potpourri jar and Old porcelain Chinaman stand next to the couple. This print would be lovely for a child's nursery |
