Although many kinds of dog are called sheepdogs, irrespective of type or breed, this one is more familiarly known as the Bob-tail - probably as it is the custom to remove the tail during puppyhood. It originated, as far as can be ascertained, from the bearded Collie, although the Old English Sheepdog of today is totally unlike its ancestor.
The breed is very agile in spite of its size, which again is very misleading, as the coat is very heavy and silky. To see a Bob-tail working a flock of sheep makes one pause and reflect on the intelligence of the dog.
It is one of the few breeds - if not the only - whose hindquarters are higher than the front shoulders. (1934)
