Leech was one of the Victorian era's foremost illustrators - a favourite in Punch magazine and highly praised for his comic observations on Society and FashionA wonderful period illustration showing the "Trial-For-Murder Mania" sweeping Victorian London - The showmaster is dressed in lawyer's wig and chequered trousers, with a dummy "Bullet-Headed" murderer in the dock! The show (trial) is the "Greatest Hit since Courvoisier" where you can "Buy the Murder Monger" with "40 Folio columns of Brutality next Sunday" and rent opera glasses within!! "All in! All in! Walk up, Ladies! Just a going to begin! None of your shams here, but real bullet-headed murderers! All in! All in! " Things don't appear to have changed much!! This, of course was the period when Jack The Ripper was hunting the streets of Victorian London - a wonderfully quirky period take on murder and mayhem |
