Her tail is curled around her body and a string of pearls nestle in a mother of pearl shell. From the painting by John William Waterhouse "The Mermaid", Exhibited for the Royal Academy in 1901. In European folklore, mermaids (sometimes called sirens) and mermen were natural beings who, like fairies, had magical and prophetic powers. They loved music and often sang.
