| Antique Print German Boxer Dog ArtA book illustration of a beautiful British dog breed photo. The print has a slightly faded look due to the reproduction process - which actually adds charm and gives an antique feel to the print. 'The dog illustrated is a genuine importation (1934), and has only been out of quarantine for a few days when photographed. Although it has not been possible to discover his origin, it is certain that he is the result of breeding between a Mastiff type and a Great Dane. He has the characteristics of both dogs, although smaller in stature. In Germany the ears are cropped, and this is supposed to render the hearing of the dog more acute, apart from making the dog look ferocious. Such a practice, however, is not permitted with any breed in this country. This dog in its native country is used by the police in following and detaining criminals, and after suitable training as a guard. As can be seen from the illustration, he does not look too gentle, but looks can be deceptive and he is actually a loveable fellow after his confidence has been gained.' |
